LETTER OF GREETING FROM MAJOR PETE MERRILL

SENIOR MARINE INSTRUCTOR

EAST COWETA HIGH SCHOOL

MARINE CORPS JROTC

Welcome to the East Coweta MCJROTC program. We are excited to start the new academic year. Our program’s overall purpose is to instill the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment. We are not a recruiting organization although we are immensely proud of our affiliation with the United States Marine Corps. Like all Marines, we do believe in and reinforce the Marine Corps Core Values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. During classroom instruction, numerous team building events, physical fitness events and leadership field trips, our program stresses personal responsibility, self confidence and mutual respect.  All of which are values that MGSgt Mark Johnson and I think will serve our students well, regardless of their future career paths.

As usual, we will remain very busy with our typical JROTC activities. MGSgt Johnson looks forward to getting our drill team up and running for the upcoming season. The drill team serves as the heart of our program and can be seen competing and flawlessly conducting ceremonies throughout our region. The rifle team has already started practicing in the afternoons. Any one interested in joining rifle or drill team should see me or MGSgt Johnson. Additional information can be found on the Drill Team and Rifle Team section on our website.

We are firmly entrenched throughout our school and local community. No school organization, club or committee at East Coweta High School does more throughout this community than the East Coweta Marine Corps JROTC program. We stay active in numerous service projects to include Toys for Tots, fundraising with the many veteran groups, support to Special Olympics, support to area charities and countless school support projects. We are obviously very proud of our students and their accomplishments.

We also have numerous social events for the upcoming academic year. We will celebrate the Marine Corps Birthday Ball in November and conduct an end of the year semi-formal Awards Banquet scheduled for May.  In my opinion, each one of our events have been very enjoyable and professional occasions for our students and families.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the high school.  I hope to see you around the school this year.
